Hybrid Homes

Log Porch and Railing on Modular Home

There’s a new term floating around the log and timber industry – hybrid home.  While the term may be new, the idea has been around since the 19th century.  A hybrid is a structure that incorporates log or timber construction with other forms of construction such as conventional framing.  Many existing log or timber homes have already integrated this concept, but it is gaining popularity with new home builders.

A hybrid home is an up-and-coming trend for several reasons.  One of the main ones is the ability to mix construction materials.  Owners are trying to build homes that reflect the environment around them.  Hybrid homes enable them to use not only logs or timbers, but stone, stucco, board siding, and metals just to name a few.

The design flexibility is a big draw.  A hybrid lends itself to a contemporary, sleek décor just as it does to a more rustic design.  For those who feel that too much wood can be overwhelming, a hybrid can be built with framed walls, ceilings or entire rooms that break up the wood.  No matter how it is used in the house, wood creates interest and sets a home apart.

Commonly, the great room or public areas of a home use log or timber construction and conventional stickframe is used in the bedrooms and baths.  Others use wood on the exterior of the home and frame interior walls or vice versa.  It’s even possible to frame the bottom, stacking logs or timbers above it blending rock and wood on the exterior.  There are really no hard-and-fast rules here.

Hybrids are also gaining popularity because owners can keep the feel of a log or timber home while reducing the costs of the projects.  It’s estimated that a framed house with log or timber accents can trim framing costs by as much as 25%.  This is a good option for people who otherwise would not be able to afford a log or timber home to feature the wood and control expenses.

Another way to keep costs in check is by using log or timber accents in a home.  These are often non-structural but bring the look of wood into a home.  Accent options include:

  • Logs or Timbers posts or corners
  • board siding

  • Log or Timber beams on the ceiling
  • Log stair or porch railing
  • Log or Timber trusses
  • Log or Timber trim around doors and windows
  • Log or Timber fireplace mantels
  • Log or Board siding
  • Log or Timber bar tops

The alternatives are endless, and most are relatively inexpensive.
